The state ferry system hopes to make a bigger footprint when it steps into the 21st century, by spending more than $376 million to spruce up and enlarge docks and terminals throughout the Puget Sound region.

In what will be the biggest terminal update in 40 years, the construction boom is intended to ease traffic congestion at some docks and speed ferry loading.

Ferry riders accustomed to spartan concrete-block terminals and wooden benches may welcome the results, but the work will be costly, could damage the environment and in one case may require removal of historic ...
