The lone survivor of India's latest caste massacre described yesterday how he hid under the beheaded bodies of his neighbors until the Maoist attackers disappeared.

Sunil Sharma, 22, his clothes stained with the blood of other victims, was in a state of shock and could barely speak coherently a day after the attack in the northern village of Senari in Bihar, the nation's most lawless state.

Police initially reported that Maoist rebels shot to death 36 upper caste villagers Thursday.

The death toll, however, was confirmed at 33 yesterday, all beheaded instead of shot. ...
