SIR ISAIAH BERLIN, now 79, and once billed at Harvard as "England's greatest conversationalist", has just received the first prize awarded by the Giovanni Agnelli Foundation, named after the founder of Fiat (grandfather of the present chairman). Mr Agnelli grandfils, who says he does not approve of economic growth unless it gives some thought to the ethical dimension" of advanced societies, was happy to give Sir Isaiah his prize for essentially sitting and thinking.

Sir Isaiah's acceptance speech, given at the Turin Opera House, was "On the Pursuit of the Ideal". ...
