SAN FRANCISCO -- Consider asking pregnant women to make an autologous blood donation if translabial or endovaginal ultrasounds show the placenta within 2 cm of the internal os, Dr. Alain Gagnon advised at the annual meeting of the American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine.
A prospective case-series cohort study of 57 women showed a 20% chance of post-partum hemorrhage requiring transfusion if the placental edge was 2cm or closer to the internal os on third-trimester ultrasound, said Dr. Gagnon of the University of British Columbia in Vancouver.
