FOR the past 40 years Mr Alberto Moravia, Euro-MP and novelist, has been Italy's leading man of letters. Each year that he fails to win the Nobel prize for literature (when it is Italy's turn), there are official lamentations. Last November, when the grand old man turned 80, the nation celebrated, and Mr Moravia was on television continually.
