HE was the actor with a thousand faces - and no-one could match the masterly way Sir Alec Guinness carried it off.

Yesterday lifelong friend Sir John Mills described Sir Alec as one of the greatest character actors, who combined his talents with charm and humility.

Sir John, 92, who starred alongside Sir Alec in the classic films Great Expectations and Tunes of Glory, said: "I remember him as first of all a wonderful actor - one of the best actors I have ever worked with - and as a sweet, lovely person."
