Every four years the country's major political parties gather for major conventions and some free time on television. A group of political scientists is trying to find out what keeps those political parties running, particularly in the South, after the balloons have dropped.

Republicans have gained power and held office in what used to be the solidly Democratic South, but that doesn't tell the whole story, said John Clark, associate professor of political science at Western Michigan University.
