A group of investors led by Germany's Steag is to build a $1,500 million power plant in Iskenderun, in the southeast. A financing agreement for the 1,210-MW, coal-fired plant was signed on 26 June and work is to start immediately, a Steag spokesman says.
Steag, a unit of German conglomerate RAG International, says that Siemens, also of Germany, is the turnkey contractor, while another German firm, Babcock-Borsig, will supply the two 605-MW steam generators. Civil works will be carried out by the local Gama. Completion is due for 2003.
