It wasn't some high-powered government-funded astronomical agency that discovered the planet Pluto in 1930.
It was Percival Lowell, a wealthy amateur astronomer from Boston who first suspected its existence while viewing the heavens from the mesa overlooking the small town of Flagstaff.
Although it was long argued whether Pluto was the ninth planet or some other celestial object, its discovery (after Lowell's death) was a landmark in modern astronomy.
