The French composer Marc-Andre Dalbavie has become renowned for his big orchestral pieces that explore the sonic qualities of specific concert spaces, presenting sound as an ever-changing kaleidoscope.
His newest work, "Sextine Cyclus," premiered by the Minnesota Orchestra at Orchestra Hall on Thursday night, is a good deal different. Smaller and more intimate, it presents the music and poetry of the medieval troubadours but at the same time engages us in an intriguing time warp in which the instrumental setting adds modernist effects and undercurrents.
