There are places to see and creatures to admire and people to meet on the Outer Banks. There's history full of superlatives and sedatives and monumental silliness.
But the scenic roads are often crowded. Visiting important sites in a hailstorm is hardly pleasant. Chatting with colorful characters is difficult if you're leaving tomorrow or they've been dead 50 years.
Sometimes the best way to appreciate the Banks is on paper.
