Jam bands rely on a formula concocted more than 30 years ago to attract fans. The freedom the Internet provides has allowed less mainstream musical styles greater exposure than they ever would have obtained through radio, television and print. And one musical subset that has taken full advantage of this technology is a genre I love: jam bands.

Jam bands are a musical genre that have no specific definition or preconceived destination. Jam-band musicians play blues, jazz, rock, bluegrass or reggae, and they use instruments all of us would recognize.
