Q. I have a black walnut tree, and I would like to plant other things near it. I have heard that black walnuts give off a toxin through their roots that kills everything you plant. Is this true?

A. Yes, walnut trees do release a toxin from their roots, but some plants don't appear to be affected.

Here is a list of these plants assembled by the University of Illinois.

Ajuga reptans (bugleweed)

Alcea rosea (hollyhock)

Asarum ...

Seattle Post-Intelligencer (Seattle, WA) ; Sanguinaria canadensis f. multiplex Double-flowered bloodroot The woodland comes alive in early spring as many bulbs and perennials begin to bloom. This includes the double-flowered bloodroot, Sanguinaria canadensis f. multiplex. This perennial grows from a rhizome, which is an underground

Crop Science ; Determination of optimal plant population (the minimum population for best yield) lowers seeding costs, reduces lodging, and ameliorates disease problems (Boquet and Walker, 1980). However, previous plant population studies have shown variable results. Optimum population can be anywhere from 30 000

Plant species mediate changes in soil microbial N in response to elevated CO2.
Ecology ; INTRODUCTION Nitrogen (N) strongly limits plant growth in many terrestrial ecosystems (Vitousek and Howarth 1991), potentially constraining the response of terrestrial ecosystems to elevated C[O.sub.2] (Bazzaz and Fajer 1992, Field et al. 1992). Elevated C[O.sub.2] could modify N availability to

Determinants of Plant U12-Dependent Intron Splicing Efficiency
Plant Cell ; Factors affecting splicing of plant U12-dependent introns have been examined by extensive mutational analyses in an in vivo tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum) protoplast system using introns from three different Arabidopsis thaliana genes: CBP20, GSH2, and LD. The results provide evidence that splicing
