Jul. 25--Oregon, the state that built a national reputation for designing alternatives to nursing homes, has become something of a victim of its own success.
The closure of 16 nursing homes in the past two years -- at the same time the elderly population is swelling -- is forcing politicians and long-term care leaders toward a growing realization: Nursing homes play a vital role and must be preserved.
