The German-born cabinetmaker Michael Thonet (1796-1871) can take credit for launching the bentwood-furniture craze.
In the 1830s, Thonet began experimenting with using a mechanical steam process to bend wood.
Moving to Vienna, Austria, he had patented his process by 1842. By the 1860s, his bentwood chairs, with their cane or plywood seats and their gracefully curved backs, had found a place in European houses.
They were popular because they were light, attractive, sturdy, comfortable and - above all - inexpensive.
