What's a department store to do, now that ladies don't lunch anymore?

Many department store retailers enjoy a rich heritage, but are struggling to maintain market share and a respectable stock price in a cutthroat retail climate beset by price-slashing, heels-nipping competitors.

In the case of the venerable Saks Fifth Avenue, its parent company opted Thursday to sever the 76-year-old upscale chain and related businesses from a core company consisting of lagging regional department stores, Herberger's included.
