SAN DIEGO -- Vocal cord dysfunction tends to be a confusing disorder that presents a diagnostic challenge, said Dr. Susan M. Brugman of the National Jewish Center for Immunology and Respiratory Medicine, Denver.
Defined as a spectrum of nonorganic disorders that involve the larynx, vocal cord dysfunction causes acute upper airway obstruction when the vocal cords close paradoxically on inspiration or when the supraglottic structures prolapse or constrict, Dr. Brugman said at the annual meeting of the American Academy of Allergy Asthma, and Immunology.
