The owners of a row of cliff-top cottages fighting to save their homes from crashing into the sea will "not go gently into the good night", a public inquiry heard yesterday.

Residents of Crangon Cottages at Birling Gap, a protected beauty spot on the South Downs near Eastbourne, are appealing against a decision to refuse permission for a 185- metre sea barrier at the foot of the crumbling cliffs.
