Lard. The mere mention of the much-maligned fat is enough to trigger a nutritionist's gag reflex.

But lard - rendered pork fat, that is - is one of several inexpensive yet hearty foodstuffs recommended in an update of a famous mathematical calculation called Stigler's Diet Problem.

Saul Gass, a business professor at the University of Maryland, is the new study's author. Gass specializes in operations research, ''the science of decision making,'' he said. ''We apply mathematical and analytical techniques to solve problems.''
