The year 1999 was a year for large jury verdicts. Was it the economy, the skill of the lawyers, or the number of cases? Was it an aberration?
For whatever reason, verdicts rose substantially over previous years.
The total of the top 10 verdicts in 1998 came to $4.10 billion, whereas the top 10 verdicts last year totaled $9.56 billion.
And last year saw the largest products liability verdict ever - a $4.93 billion verdict against General Motors.
You might expect a large verdict to be awarded in California but not in states like Idaho. ...
