Jul. 14--HotData Inc. moved into One Commodore Plaza in April 1998, paying $15 a square foot for its office space.

Less than two years later, the rent in the downtown building had jumped to more than $23 a square foot. So HotData decided to move elsewhere, finding cheaper office space in a building in North Austin.

It's less fancy and doesn't boast restaurants within walking distance or a view of Town Lake. But the $16-a-square-foot price tag has enabled the company to more than triple its space. And the parking is free.
