Storm clouds, as black and heavy as anything could be and still hang in the sky, gathered in the east. Underneath the clouds, the tide returned to the sea, like a turquoise carpet rolling off the floor of the world.

Two friends and I had settled into a cluster of $10-a-night beach huts on the east coast of the African island of Zanzibar. It wasn't a town, or a village, or a development. It was a stretch of coast where some Zanzibaris make a living fishing and cultivating seaweed, and a few people from other parts of the world come to forget their work and woes.
