Roy Cummings' life had its own soundtrack - a trumpet-wailing medley of bebop, cool jazz and big-band swing.

From taking trumpet lessons as a child to directing jazz ensembles at the University of Washington to spinning Stan Getz records at home, Mr. Cummings' life was surrounded by song.

``He loved music and he tried to share that with everyone in his life,'' said his son, Bryan, of Seattle.

Mr. Cummings, a trumpet and jazz studies instructor at the UW, died Wednesday of a massive heart attack. He was 61.
