While Brother Eugene Gizzi could wear normal street clothes as he makes the rounds visiting patients at St. Alexius Medical Center in Hoffman Estates, he says he still prefers the uniform of a black shirt and collar that most people associate with a Catholic priest.

"It's so people, patients and employees alike can recognize what I'm here for."

Gizzi isn't a priest, however, he's an Alexian Brother, a Catholic ministry that focuses on care of the sick and poor. The order has a 700-year legacy and began as a lay association to bury victims of the bubonic plague in Germany. ...
