A federal proposal to reclassify gray wolves across much of the nation as threatened, not endangered, reflects the success of recovery efforts that have included changing the public perception of the animal, a Wisconsin wildlife biologist says.

Decades of bounty hunting in Wisconsin wiped out the state's wolf population before the bounty was lifted and wolves began migrating into the state from Minnesota, according to the state Department of Natural Resources.

The state now has about 250 wolves in dozens of packs.
