The Elbe forms a formidable barrier between the City of Hamburg and the Port of Hamburg. In the late nineteenth century there were few crossings of the river and most workers took the ferry from the City to the Port. Hamburg, being close to the North Sea, occasionally had severe weather conditions which prevented the ferries from crossing the river. The alternative route, by bridge, was a 10 km walk or bicycle ride.
