IN THE transient world of professional dance, what inspires Garth Fagan's dancers to stick with the award-winning, groundbreaking choreographer for 10, 20, even 30 years?

``It's ever-challenging, always rewarding and quite an education,'' says Norwood Pennewell, who's been with the Rochester, N.Y.-based Garth Fagan Dance company for 21 years.

``Most of Garth's dancers stay with him as long as they can,'' adds Pennewell, who is described in company publicity materials as Fagan's ``assistant and muse.''
