A Ramseur man narrowly avoided injury Thursday when his combine and a surrounding field of oats caught fire.

Samuel Phillips, 73, of 5840 Buffalo Ford Road, was riding the combine at around noon when it caught fire. He jumped off the combine soon after the blaze started and escaped with minor burns on his right hand. The combine was severely charred and unsalvageable.

"All of a sudden I was covered up with fire," Phillips said. "It was coming up in the cab all around me. I tried to reach back and stop the motor, but the motor was hot. Then the field caught fire. I jumped ...
