Taiwan has become the world's number one producer of notebook PCs. According to the Market Intelligence Center operated by Taiwan's government-sponsored Institute for Information Industry, the island cranked out 49% of the world's notebooks in 1999, earning over $10 billion in revenues.

It's not easy being number one in the notebook PC business. The winners must hit a moving target that reflects changes in technology and production costs.

But what's worse, fragmentation of the notebook market has reduced the business to constant guessing game about which design factors ...
