JERUSALEM_Hafez al-Assad, the fearsome, iron-willed Syrian president who seized power in 1970 and served longer than any leader in the modern Arab world, died Saturday at 69.
The Syrian parliament quickly voted to amend the country's constitution to make Assad's son Bashar, a British-educated ophthalmologist, eligible to assume the presidency. The legislators voted to lower the age requirement for president from 40 to 34. Bashar is 34.
