Croatia's new guard is trying to shake off the country's recent past

The shadow of Franjo Tudjman's dominating personality has disappeared fast in Croatia. The long-serving, ultra-nationalist former president died in December. In a general election three weeks later, his Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ), the party that had ruled Croatia since 1990 and which had led the country into independence in 1991, was trounced by the Croat electorate. This still included Mr Tudjman's controversial expatriate voting list for ethnic Croats living in Bosnia-Hercegovina and elsewhere abroad. ...
