The Vikings beat the Detroit Lions 24-22 Sunday night, and moved into a tie with Philadelphia and Washington at 8-6 for a wild-card playoff position, with an advantage over both in the tiebreaker. Brad Johnson improved his negotiating case, completing 19 of 29 passes for 195 yards and three touchdowns.

But a big hero might have been Cris Carter, who again surpassed 1,000 yards in receptions, at 1,085. He caught his 85th pass for a deciding touchdown, and later recovered a foolish effort by the Lions - an onside kick with 2 minutes, 34 seconds left with the score 24-22.
