If you look long enough at the satisfied smile of John Ireland in Mark Balma's new fresco at the Cathedral of St. Paul, you can almost hear the old archbishop say: I'm finally here.

He could be referring to the moment portrayed on the fresco when, after 11 years of planning and eight years of construction, he triumphantly entered the new cathedral to celebrate its first mass on Palm Sunday, 1915.

Or he might mean he's pleased that at long last images of him and Joseph Cretin, St. Paul's first Catholic bishop, adorn the 11-by-18-foot panels slated for that purpose since ...
