Emerging diseases; Ticks carry multitude of threats A study has found that Lyme disease is not the only illness carried by the deer tick, and that the transmission of two or more diseases at the same time can increase the suffering.(NEWS)

Scientists say they have found more evidence that a single deer tick common in the woods and grasslands of Minnesota and northern Wisconsin can simultaneously transmit three or more infections, including Lyme disease, to humans.

The combination of infections and symptoms might explain the wide variation in the severity and the duration of what is commonly known as Lyme disease, said Dr. David Persing, director of the Mayo Clinic's microbiology laboratory in Rochester, Minn.
