Island Av. is a narrow, pothole-plagued lane parting the prairie grasses and untended woods that thrive on Nicollet Island. Along that road, which trails around the perimeter of the island past several 19th-century houses, one can get a glimpse of several early Minneapolis architectural styles.

"It's sort of like a sampler of architectural styles from the earliest days of Minneapolis as a city," said Bob Roscoe, a residential designer and commissioner with the Minneapolis Heritage Preservation Commission. But the island neighborhood is "more like an urban township" he added.
