1/3 His name was David, and if reduced to adjectives, he was my antithesis: mentally retarded, African-American and HIV-positive. He was dirt poor and lived in a group home.

When the opportunity arose for me to become his AIDS buddy, the demographic chasm daunted me, as did the idea of watching someone die. I was 22 years old and hadn't known anyone with HIV. But the arrangement was only for the summer, so I accepted.
