What's it all about, this John Beargrease Sled Dog Marathon?

What makes mushers and handlers throw themselves into 500 miles and four days of numbing cold and fatigue? What makes Alaskan huskies leap and yowl until they finally get to pull? Why do hundreds of people turn out each year to clap mittens and cheer?

It's a celebration, say the people and the mushers and the handlers - a celebration of winter and of hardy constitutions; a celebration of Indian heritage and community spirit; a celebration of dogs.
