Despite the closing of the Basilica of St. Francis, this isn't a bad time to visit Assisi. Hotels, normally booked to the rafters, are half empty. Restaurants have open tables.
The city, which normally hosts about 6 million tourists annually, was virtually deserted this spring, even shortly before Easter, typically a peak tourist time.
Virtually all shops, restaurants and hotels are now open and eager for business, but most of the city's main attractions, especially its famous cathedrals, are closed for restoration.
