The pieces are in place, as a valley awaits the final touch on a new spire at Gustavus Adolphus College.

The cross goes up today.

The return of the steeple, to be celebrated in a ceremony at Christ Chapel today, is being heralded by college officials as the culmination of the campuswide rebuilding effort that followed the March 29 tornadoes in this south-central Minnesota city.

Among the storm's more heartrending images was a spire toppled by winds so fierce that they shook loose the bolts in the chapel basement.
