Ron Cole strolled through withered wildflowers and tawny prairie grasses last week on a rocky ridge overlooking the Minnesota River Valley near the Minnesota-South Dakota border.

In a sense, he was striding through history.

The field he walked looked pretty much as it did 150 years ago, before white settlers arrived and began plowing under the fertile soil of the Great Plains. It is a remnant of the 25 million acres of tallgrass prairie that once blanketed vast portions of Minnesota and Iowa.
