Above a ceremonial entrance to the Minneapolis Institute of Arts' spectacular new galleries of Asian art, which open today, is a Chinese inscription that translates: "In celebration of bestowed glory."

That happy phrase recorded the gratitude of the family that originally built the archway 270 years ago at its home in eastern China. It applies equally well to the museum's 22 new galleries of Asian art, a veritable museum-within-the-museum at 2400 3rd Av. S.
