In 1644 Gian Lorenzo Bernini sculpted "The Ecstasy of St. Teresa" for the Cornaro Chapel of the Santa Maria della Vittoria church in Rome. Bernini was the great artist of the Italian baroque, and his image of the saint was one of his - and the history of sculpture's - epic achievements.

The National Gallery of Art just opened a show of 27 spectacular models of baroque architecture with related sculpted pieces, paintings, prints, drawings and medals. Among them is a clay preparatory study for "Saint Teresa."
