1/3 Scenic design is not usually the first thing that comes to mind when one thinks of a play. Lead actors and directors usually get top billing. But the physical setting is critical to shows, whether they have a budget of one farthing or $1 million.

The Twin Cities theater community boasts a bevy of resident designers, including Sasha Thayer, Jack Barkla and Nayna Ramey, who come from a variety of backgrounds. Some, such as Michael Sommers and Seitu Jones, happened into the theater. Others are directors who design, including Bain Boehlke and Joel Sass.
