1/3 More than a quarter of a century has passed since kidnappers whisked his mother from her Orono home, collected a $1 million ransom and tipped authorities that she was chained to a tree in Minnesota's north woods.

Yet the case is still unsolved, and Harry C. Piper III is still haunted by it.

He is researching to write a book, hoping to chronicle one of Minnesota's most notorious crimes, the heroics of his parents - the late Virginia Piper and Harry C. Piper Jr. - and the traumatic effects of the kidnapping and the FBI investigation that followed.
