THE SONG OF ROLAND.(Charlemagne's conquest of Spain led to the writing of the poem 'The Song of Roland')

Charles the king, our great Charlemagne, For seven full years has been in Spain, And conquered that proud land as far as the sea.

So begins the chanson de geste known as The Song of Roland. This heroic epic of 4,000 lines was written in Old French verse around 1100, perhaps by Turold, who is mentioned at the end of the poem. It is based on an historic event.
