The Second Punic War (218-201 B.C.) saw the two greatest military powers of the western Mediterranean -- Carthage and Rome -- embroiled in a struggle for supremacy. For almost 20 years, thousands of soldiers fought the war across mountains and deserts, as well as on the islands and waters that separated the two countries -- one in Africa, the other in Europe.
