Carthage and Rome had not always been enemies. In the years before 264 B.C. the two nations had been on friendly terms with one another. The relationship changed, however, soon after the Greek king Pyrrhus entered southern Italy.

Pyrrhus had come to help Greek colonists in the area oppose the advancing Roman troops. When he realized that his efforts were in vain, he left Italy and sailed for the island of Sicily.
