Before Jean-Pierre Rampal, the flute had been overlooked as a solo instrument. One of the most recorded classical musicians, he played Indian, jazz and English folk, in addition to his Billboard-topping Baroque music. Rampal is dead at 78.

Kermit Lansner, 78, who was managing editor and then Editor of NEWSWEEK from 1965 to 1972, died of complications of lung cancer.
