The kids on this field trip jumped out of the car and ran down to the sand bordering the Delaware Bay. Sandpipers, red knots, sanderlings, ruddy turnstones, and laughing gulls covered the sand like a carpet of feathers. The birds were snapping up food along the water's edge.
"What are they eating?" Mary Alice asked me.
