Ford Madox Brown's wife Emma succumbed to a feverish illness in September 1872, the month before he made this drawing of her in coloured chalks.
This had been an eventful year for Emma. She and Ford Madox Brown had supported Dante Gabriel Rossetti in the throes of a breakdown, Brown suffered attacks of gout, and in September their daughter Catherine was married. Emma recovered, unlike the young artist Henry James Holding, whose widow was supported by a sale of pictures by fellow artists, including this one.
